Female Say's Trig

The other day, when turning over a hanging fern on the ground, a little cricket hopped into view. I'm used to encountering the wingless nymphs of the Southeastern Field Cricket (Gryllus rubens), so this was a new specimen for me. As it turns out, this cricket was a short-winged female Say's Trig or Bush Cricket, scientifically known as Anaxipha exigua. It's a member of the genus of Brown Trigs, which in turn are part of the subfamily Trigonidiinae (Winged Bush Crickets, called Trigs for short).

The ovipositor between the cerci signifies that this is a female.
