Scarites: Big-Headed Ground Beetle

Here are two specimens of Scarites, a genus of large-headed black ground beetles. The chief characteristics of this kind of beetle are:

  • Long, shiny black body
  • Large mandibles (mouthparts)
  • Two large depressions on a big head
  • Grooved elytra (wing cases), which are separated from the smooth pronotum by a peduncle (waist)
Further analysis must be done to determine the species. I found both specimens under bordering-bricks.
