It seems I'm the victim of a malady peculiar to Compact Flash card users: bent pins. Using a flashlight and a pair of tweezers, I realigned the pins I had bent with my rough handling, and now my computer recognizes the new 8GB card I bought yesterday. Unfortunately the "do-over" pictures I took on the damaged card can't be retrieved without a lot of trouble, so I'll have to re-do the re-do. Good thing most of my subjects are orb-weaving spiders. I've identified the roaming spiders I photographed earlier, but I need to track down some specimens. If I can't within the next week or so, I'll consider posting the information without pictures, as I've been doing for the insects I couldn't find again.
So I've got a working camera and CF card. Now all I need is a card reader that's more durable. I bought a CF adapter on Amazon for under $17. It's made by PixelFlash and boasts a deeper insert for the card, reducing the risk of bent pins. The card slides along quite a ways before touching the pins, and by then it's already aligned. I'm hoping I can get some good use out of it. Until it comes in I'm going to try to use the reader on my computer, at least to post the recent sightings. Or instead of that, I could use the one on my dad's computer. I must be extra careful, though, not to corrupt another card. At any rate, I'll store the photos on my new card, now with the confidence that I will be able to retrieve them later.
