Photoperiodic Leafhopper

Stirellus bicolor, also known as S. obtutus, varies in color depending on the length of day and the temperature. On a warm June day in South Carolina, it is iridescent with prominent black stripes. I found the following specimen on Yellow Bell.

S. bicolor belongs to the subfamily Deltocephalinae, tribe Stenometopiini. When researching photoperiodism, beware of strong evolutionary overtones. Remember that our Creator gave these leafhoppers the ability to change color, not mindless evolution.
