Belonging to the tribe Proconiini, subfamily Cicadellinae (Sharpshooters), the Southeastern Grass Leafhopper (Cuerna costalis) feeds primarily on grasses, as its common name suggests. Appropriately, I found this specimen on a stalk of ordinary grass within Monkey Grass. This is the only species of Cuerna found in the Southeast, and the only one with red on the legs. Characteristics include an overall black-and-red color with longitudinal stripes on the forewing, a conspicuous white stripe running from the eye along the side of the abdomen, and a red spot on the tip of the abdomen (not seen in the photos). I got a few good photos of this leafhopper before attempting to move the stalk of grass, whereupon it vanished.
