Not long ago I found a lone
Hibiscus Bug nymph (
Niesthrea louisianica) roaming the cross-tie area of our backyard. An eye-catching little insect, but alas, wingless. Days later, I spotted a newly molted adult, trying out her wings for the first time. They might have still been moist, because she kept flexing them but wouldn't fly away. The
first adult I found back in November was dull-colored, while this one was brightly-colored. Could this be another example of
photoperiodism?
