Heading toward the front steps yesterday evening, I was arrested by a strange sight: a large spider descending on a single line from the roof right in front of me. It landed on a brick step and crawled away as quickly as possible. In its jaws was a kudzu bug! I've never seen anything like that before. Fortunately I was able to rouse myself out of my awestruck stupor to snap a few photos.
So, let me introduce you to our local eight-legged ninja, the Crab Spider (family Thomisidiae). I believe this specimen probably belongs to the genus Xysticus (Ground Crab Spiders), but is of a different species that the first one I found. If you can identify it, please let me know.
And remember, if anyone asks, you saw nothing!
