Ladybug Life Cycle

You may have noticed these spiky orange-black insects crawling around on your plants:



Those are two different instars of Harmonia axyridis, the Multicolored Asian Lady Beetle. They usually molt through 4 instars, shedding their exoskeleton each time. Here's one in the process of pupating:

It secretes an adhesive to attach itself to the leaf.

And here are some pupae:


The larva remains in the pupa for about a week. After emerging, its wings will harden and its spots will appear, and soon it will look like the familiar ladybug we all know and love:
