Orchard Orbweaver Couple

As I mentioned in my previous post, male spiders will often stake out a female, waiting for her to mature so he can mate with her. I've witnessed this not only in House Spiders, but in Orchard Orbweavers (Leucauge venusta). The smaller, darker-colored male lingered near the female's web, hoping to mate with her before another male came along. He had to wait a long time.

Notice the male's swollen pedipalps: when the time comes, he will use these to transfer sperm to the female's epigynum.
